Our Church History

A BRIEF HISTORY OF OUR CHURCH

August 1947- During the summer, a tent meeting was held in Flatwoods, sponsored by the Raceland Baptist Church.  An interest was shown by the Baptists of Flatwoods to organize a church in that community.  The Raceland Baptist Church and Pastor, Edwin H. Ketner agreed to help in the organization of a Missionary Baptist Church in Flatwoods, Kentucky.

September 28, 1947- A meeting was held in the Advance Grade School, Flatwoods with 21 men forming a council representing churches of Greenup Association of Baptists.  36 came forward, moving their memberships from the Raceland Baptist Church to join the new church.  These thirty-six pioneers took action that day which continues to touch lives today.

March 24, 1948- the church borrowed ten thousand dollars from the
First & Peoples  Bank of Russell, KY to construct a basement.  The church held its first meeting in this building on October 17, 1948.  This was done during the ministry of Edwin H. Ketner, first pastor of the church.  The infant church began to grow and soon became an influential and vital part of the Flatwoods community.

December 1952- Rev. E.G. Neal came to lead on in the building of a house of  worship, and the building of a congregation to fill it.  On April 5, 1953, a building fund was started which grew to approximately thirty thousand dollars by December 1956.  On April 4, 1956, the church authorized the trustees to make a loan of thirty thousand dollars from the First Federal Loan, Ashland, KY.  On May 21, 1956, ground was broken and work started on our new building.  Mr. Can Holbrook of Ashland, KY was the contractor and Mr. George M. Lusk of Ashland, KY was the architect.  The new auditorium and part of the educational unit were completed in February 1957.  Since its organization in September 1947, the church grew steadily, both in church membership and in the building program.  It was an exciting decade.

November 1959- Clel B. Rodgers was called to be the pastor of the church.  In 1961, the church purchased the McKenzie property west of the church building.  It was during the 1960’s that the church reached its highest membership and Sunday school attendance.  It was a time when the city was growing at a phenomenal rate and the church fought to grow with it.  There were new opportunities and new challenges.  And, there was a gospel to be lived out in the community.

July 1970- Construction of the education building began at a cost of $55,280.00.  The building is red brick exterior to correspond with the main building.  The building of this educational facility was an indication of the desire of Flatwoods Baptists to reach more people through Bible Study.  The educational building was dedicated on November 15, 1970.  This was done during the ministry of Chester Culver who was pastor from February 1967 until November 1970.

September 1971- The pastor’s office was moved from the basement of the main building to the educational building.  New furnishings, carpet, and bookshelves were added at this time.  In November 1972, the office was paneled and drapes were added to match the décor.  In the fall of 1972, extensive work was done on the church kitchen.  Many Wednesday night dinners were served from that kitchen.

November 1972- Robert C. Elliott began his ministry and served longer than any other pastor to date.  He served in a period of great transition for the church.  It was a time of searching anew for identity and direction as a church family.  During the eight years of his pastorate, several improvements were made to our church facilities.  The most crucial program initiated during Elliott’s pastorate came in October 1980Because We Care, a financial plan for repairing and remodeling our facilities was instituted at that time.  This endeavor lead to the revitalization of the buildings and grounds.

August 1981- Kenneth D. Holden came as our pastor.  Ken served our church for 12 ½ yrs.  During that time, a Because We Care fund allowed improvements to be made to our property and buildings.  A reorganization of the educational property, buildings, and programs enhanced growth.  In 1984, we purchased the lot on the corner of Bluegrass Street and Argillite Road.  Major renovation and remodeling was done in the basement of the church.  This gave us more Sunday school space as well as a media library.  This area is now called the fellowship hall.

In 1994- Donald F. Coleman came as our pastor. Since then we have added a multipurpose room, and connected the church to the educational building. We have remodeled the kitchen. We have had great support from our church members in a Together We Build Program, a program to pay off our debt in three years. We have added a handicap ramp to our sanctuary. We paved the parking lot. We carpeted the front steps. Landscaping around the church has added to the beauty of the surroundings. We have personal hearing helps for the hearing impaired. We have made many improvements to our property and grounds. We have a new sign facing Argillite Road.
